Greenacres School

Kindergarten orientation is typically held in May.  During this experience, your child will visit Greenacres School on two separate occasions. The first visit is the individual screening visit where your child will  meet with the Psychologist and Speech and Language Pathologist.  Your child will participate in a brief screening during which we will have an opportunity to get to know him/her a little better. 

The second visit is the group visit during which your child will have an opportunity to meet our kindergarten teachers, as well as the Psychologist, Learning Resource Center teachers and Speech and Language Pathologist.  Children will participate in three different centers with a small group of their peers.  During this time, your child will practice cutting, pasting, drawing, identifying letters, counting, stringing beads and stacking blocks.  They will also be engaged in some gross motor activities, including hopping and balancing. The session will end with a read-aloud, during which one of our teachers will read a story to the children about starting kindergarten.

We are committed to the heterogeneous grouping of all children, based on gender, age, personality, and areas of strength or need and these visits contribute to our knowledge of your child.

During the individual screening, your child will be engaged in short activities to determine:

•  Basic Personal Knowledge
•  Visual-Motor Skills
•  Numerical Concepts
•  Directional Concepts
•  Ability to Follow Directions
•  Memory for Spoken Language
•  Knowledge of Shapes, Numbers, and Letters
